As a reminder to Americans: We fucked up the blue-red color scheme. Red is labor/left most places. Blue is conservative/right in the same.

Carry on.

Yup.. Red = Left. Blue = Right. In this case blue = extreme right.. like “all muslims bad... taxes bad..”

They’ve started to think that all bad things can be blamed on Muslims... sadly.

Huh. In Canada, blue is right, red is centre, and orange is left.

here in Norway (and most of Europe) Blue = right, Green = centre(ish)(mostly environment though), Red = left. The thing is.. our left is waaaaay left compared to the left in the US though..

Most problems are chicken and egg type questions (which came first?). So they find a scapegoat rather than realize a little give and take is needed.

Same here, bud, in comparison to the US. Not as left as you guys, though.

So, the Red-Left-Labor connection is old (and used to be the way it was done with the Democratic party in the US), but I think after a long period of alternation/having no pattern, the major networks in the US fixed on blue-Democratic, red-Republican. Somewhere around 2000, IIRC.

However, as others note, YMMV, as parties adopt their own colors, so in multi-party systems, you are gonna have more colors/complexity.

I consider myself a socialist (everyone should have equal rights, rich or poor..), I guess I’d be considered somewhat left wing in Canada.. in the US though.. I’d’ve been a fuckin’ commie..

But yeah voting for DF is pretty danm bad... You are going to see some stupid immigration laws from this side of the water, in the next four years. Although most of them won’t go through due to EU regulation.

I’d also argue that, thanks to the differences in the party systems (thanks PR elections!) you also get more than a single dimension along which to string the parties.

Yup.. We do have rich people giving money to the parties here.. but we have more than two parties.. Last count gave me more than seven parties in our national election.

I am quite sure that it’s not. Lots of distinctions between the two, especially with respect to the concept of property ownership and capital ownership. It’s a matter of degrees, and conflating the two is saying having a glass of wine is like chugging a bottle of whiskey.

Yeah, the term Socialist is related to mostly “commies” here. But not “Fucking Commies”. That is a whole different Ultra Conservative adjective. Politics.

In Finland the green is the environmental people’s party and they are even called greens (in Finnish that is vihreät). But this is slightly confusing as also the “farmer’s party” is using green as their color. Blue is also color for the rights and and red is lefts. But we have the mild lefts, slightly more lefts and the extreme lefts (communist party whom no-one votes nowadays).

Rights are the common rich guy party but then we have also the slightly more extreme rights (who oppose immigration among other basic stuff) but they tend to act like idiots and the rest of the country is ashamed for them. There’s also the Swedish speakers’ party that is also rich guy party but in Swedish.

And they are all idiots. I hate politics.

But Friday is indeed big party day here too. The midsummer festivities are about to begin! Tomorrow’s weather is going to suck but ideally it should look like this.

Politics in Finland are pretty much like politics in Norway.. right.. VERY right... EXTREME RIGHT.. a bunch of guys in the center.. then left. a bit more left and so much more left... Right? :P

Just be happy you don’t have Sverigedemokraterna :)

Will you be driving snowmobiles on the water though?

I used to give money to people on the street. I took a job in an area with a lot of “homeless” people who stand on the corners and solicit money. I have talked with a few of them and asked what they really need. The answer was not food or a place to stay, they already had those. It was money for alcohol because they run out of money before the next check comes.

Yeah... I get that, I understand it as well.. and I know a lot of them will answer alcohol or drugs... I’m an alcoholic myself. The thing is though, we need to to at least TRY to help these people. Our government won’t it seems.. My thought is, I can’t help them out of the shit they are in, but I can give them a coin or two so they perhaps could do something about the anxiety they have.

Here they are entitled to what we call Welfare. That is money they receive every month. They are provided with food and shelter, if they desire, by various municipal agencies and social groups. Because this is a warmer climate, many choose to live in “tent cities”. Their major want is alcohol or drugs in some cases. Mostly alcohol. So, I do not contribute often.

We have welfare here as well, but if you come from say Romania you won’t get that.. You won’t get welfare if you haven’t been employed in Norway...

Here’s where I differ from most people... I think we should give everyone a decent living for a few months.. we’ll figure out where she/he’s from later on. :)

Good point you make. Something I really like about Canada (this probably applies to much of Europe, too) that they do not assume that all students are going to college and provide training in trades and things like that. Here, it died off a lot of years ago.

I started out in a 4 year college. (Grand Valley State in Michigan.) I realized after the second year that I could not afford it any more. I took a job with a company that was tearing out and recycling abandoned railroad track. 3 years later me and 2 other employees bought the company. We did well for 7 years, after which we were having to bid on track over a thousand miles away. We all had kids and being gone for several months was not attractive to us. We sold it.

Anyway, this all led to this that and the other thing and I got into sales. Spent the next 2000 years doing sales. College is great, but you have to follow what you are good at. That is where the money is.

Usually the party that got majority in the last election did something stupid and in the next the one they aren’t going to have much success.

I’m pretty sure that guy north up will do that also. I live below snowmobile area.
